How to Save Money on High Summer Electricity Bills

How to save money on energy bills in the summer

Air conditioning bills can really increase during the summer months! We all like to be cool and comfortable in our homes, but this comes at a price. However, there are many ways you can save on air conditioning during summertime!

Helpful Tips to Lower Your Energy Bill in the Summer:

Preventative Maintenance

Maintenance is key when it comes to keeping your air conditioning bills down. Having dirty coils inside your unit can drastically impact effectiveness, and increase cost in the summer.

Before the summer begins, you schould schedule a preventative maintenance appointment to make sure your air conditioning is ready for summer. Doing this before summer starts is really important, because once summer begins, you definitely don't want to have anything wrong with your air conditioning. It's the worst when it's the middle of summer, 90 degrees outside, and the air conditioning kicks!

Air Conditioning Drains

Make sure that air conditioning drain lines are clear and flowing well, as the unit drains the moisture and condensation. You can usually hear the drain lines running to the floor drain. Make sure that the pitch is proper and that the drain line hasn't been accidentally altered in any way.

Make sure water isn't sitting or backed up, which can easily happen if someone bumped into it, or somehow it was moved into the furnace area. Making sure the drains are clear will prevent future problems and will save you money in the long run.

Check the Freon Levels

Closed-loop air conditioning must be fine-tuned. Low Freon levels will damage the capacity level and efficiency of your air conditioning unit. Make sure your Freon levels are correct to avoid future damage and repairs. Two of the easiest ways you can tell that your levels are off if the A/C is blowing warm air or if you hear a hissing sound coming from your unit.

Balancing the Air Flow

Make sure you balance your air flow during cool months! Reduce the flow, or shut off basement registers and force the air upstairs. Cold air falls, so it's more effective to use top-down cooling. This will save you some money in the long run.

These are just a few tips on how you can save money on your air conditioning bills in the summer. If you have any questions or need any work done on your air conditioning unit, contact Viccarone or call Sandy, Dan, or Tim at 440-748-6100 to schedule a service visit. We are committed to providing our customers with the best HVAC service around!

A little update from Viccarone HVAC for when its time to replace that Furnace: Did you know the US Department of Energy has enacted that all furnaces switch production over from PSC blower motors to more efficient ECM motors effective for production after July 3, 2019. At Viccarone HVAC, we have been much converted now for about 12 weeks on inventory and installing 90% of our installations with the new ECM motor designs. Spare parts and service needs are being addressed with all the manufacturers we deal with daily. A little explanation about the motor designs: On many installed furnaces, the original (OEM) blower motor is a PSC model. Short for Permanent split capacitor, PSC motors are designed to do what furnace motors have always done in the past: simply turn on and off. The output of a PSC motor isnt controllable and it has no intermediate speeds. Its either running at full output or its not running at all. The energy consumption of the motor is therefore fixed at a single
